Cedrus was the first brand to collaborate with Foil Drive on an integrated assist/e-foil mast, and we are excited to announce the upcoming launch of our Evolution Integrated mast lineup. These masts will be based on our recently released aluminum forged platform, offering unmatched performance at an affordable price point.

How is the product development and testing going?

We had some unexpected anodizing issues, which have since been resolved. We've tested the e-foil version, video below. We plan to test the assist version the week of January 19th, and will open pre-orders once we confirm the behavior on touchdown. While the Forged mast properties are proven based on the feedback of hundreds of customers, touchdown behavior of the integrated mast is not something that can be predicted using CFD or traditional analysis methods.

What mast length and pod location will you offer?

At launch, we are offering a ~78cm mast (our most popular length, which assembles to a total length above 80cm), with the motor located ~17cm from the mount. This will be updated once the specs are final. The launch batch will not have options; we need to stay focused on developing our manufacturing processes. Future batches will have other options (e-foil, different lengths, assist locations) and potentially even fully custom.

When will orders open?

We plan to open orders for a small batch of launch customer masts the week of January 26. Sign up for our newsletter (at the bottom of this page) to be notified when we open orders.

How much?

We plan to hit a price point below integrated carbon mast offerings, but slightly above other aluminum integrated masts. Our mast will feature a machined aluminum mini-pod (not the big plastic pod), a universal foil connection, and like all of our products be fully manufactured in the USA.

Why Aluminum?

Aluminum offers us the most flexibility with respect to mast length, pod location, assembly, and serviceability. We hope to offer custom lengths and pod locations, which is simply not possible with carbon masts due to the required number of molds and complex tooling. Our forged aluminum mast has industry leading glide and stiffness, even exceeding the performance of many carbon masts. It's a perfect platform for Foil Drive, where weight is less critical (due to heavy batteries and motors) and allows us to launch an integrated mast much sooner than if we were waiting for tooling required to make carbon masts. Oh, and it's bomb proof which is great for learning or foiling in shallow places.

Does it use the same adapters?

Of course! The mast will feature our Evolution Adapter interface, compatible with Surf, Wind, Forged, and Clydesdale masts.

Does it make noise like Forged?

Testing so far has not revealed the same whistling or humming common to our Forged and Clydesdale masts with certain foils. We believe this is due to limited water ingress of the Integrated mast, as well as the added weight of the motor changing the system dynamics and resonant frequencies of the structure. We cannot make any guarantees however that the mast won't make noises, because it does feature the same welded architecture as our acoustic masts, which will better transfer foil vibrations than bolted assemblies.

Where can I get it?

Cedrus remains primarily direct-to-consumer, and we ship masts all over the world. We work closely with MacKite in the US, and are open to working with other dealers should there be interest.

Will you sell batteries and motors?

At launch, no. One of the nice things about the Gen 2 foil drive system is that it allows us to integrate masts without stocking the complete system. So you will need to procure your motor and battery system from a retailer like MacKite. This mast will not be compatible with Gen 1 Foil Drive systems.

I'm not sure I need integrated.

Totally, integrated masts aren't for everyone and do have some drawbacks. Our current forged aluminum mast features a Foil Drive compatible mount at a very low price so you can grab that from our store now and tape the cable on and be riding now!

FAQs

Yes! Evolution Aluminum Forged and Clydesdale feature the same adapter interface as Surf and Wind.

The stiffness of a mast is dependent on material and more importantly, design. UHM carbon is a stiffer material, but the ultimate stiffness of the mast depends on the layup and shape. Aluminum masts have historically not been very stiff because they are very thin in order to minimize drag. Thanks to our forging technology, we are able to have a thick mast up high contributing massive amounts of stiffness, with minimal drag below the waterline.

Yes, minor weld porosity in aluminum is normal and only becomes visual after grinding. Our robots yield extremely consistent results in terms of weld stiffness and strength, and the minor porosity has no structural impact and the pinholes do not affect performance of the mast.

We have found through months of testing that certain foils can produce acoustic and haptic feedback when paired with Evolution Aluminum. Due to the thin walls, high stiffness, and hollow channel that does not fill with water, the mast can transmit whistles and hums at specific frequencies with certain foils. We have learned to appreciate this feedback, and found that it can be mitigated by changing ride height, angle to weather, speed, or wing loading. Rider weight, board size, and other variables like water density can affect the response. It is a complex system dynamic. All other aluminum masts are held together by screws, mounts, and doodads, and typically fill with water, and will therefore not transmit vibrations or acoustic energy. You can try a thin rubber pad between the board and mast to reduce the noise level; feel free to contact us with any further questions or comments.

Of course! Forged is perfectly capable of dock-starting and pump foiling with the biggest foils. In fact, if you're looking for an all-around mast to do it all, we'd recommend Forged. We only decided to offer the Clydesdale as an even more economical entry point to the Cedrus ecosystem, and for those riders really looking to ride the biggest foils and slowest speeds only.

No, Evolution masts are not compatible with original Cedrus Classic adapters.

No, Evolution Aluminum is completely and permanently sealed from water entirely by welding. No glues or sealants are used.

Yes. All aluminum extrusions have some very minor degree of asymmetry due to the die and extrusion process. We know because we've extruded a lot of masts and we've evaluated other brands' masts too. The slight asymmetry in the extrusion is further amplified by our forging process, and can result in a slightly textured surface due to plasticity of the aluminum inside the mast cavity. The shape and surface has no impact on mast performance. Asymmetry can actually reduce drag by altering the pattern of vortex shedding off the trailing edge of the mast, and the boundary layer is very thick and turbulent near the trailing edge and not affected by slight changes in surface roughness.

No, but we offer two case/sleeve options for sale on our site if you want or need a case. All of our products are made locally and we want to keep prices as low as possible while giving our customers choices.

We have never used rubber pads on the back of our aluminum mounts. We have found that over time, the glue fails and the pad falls off. Furthermore, the pad serves little purpose. With a clean mount and board surface and tight screws, the mount does not scratch the board and provides the most direct connection without a piece of rubber.
